School transport
The municipality of Tuusula organises free transport for pre-school and primary school pupils or assists with transporting or accompanying pupils to school in certain cases. Secondary school pupils who are subject to compulsory education are eligible for school transport assistance from Kela if their journey to school is at least 7 kilometres long. School transport subsidies are applied for from Kela.

Criteria for granting

Transportation is also granted in the following cases:
- pre-school pupils and pupils in grades 1–2 of basic education, based on the distance travelled, if the jou ey to school is more than three kilometres. The distances are measured by the municipality.

A reason must be given for the cancellation in order to avoid incorrect damage cancellations. A reason such as “away” is sufficient. Never write anything personal or health-related as the reason for cancellation.
The service immediately forwards the cancellation to the driver and the municipal school transport coordinator.
Please note that cancelling the trip does not replace the need to notify the school of the student’s absence.
If the trip is cancelled in error and you wish to reinstate it, please notify us immediately by email, stating the student’s full name and school and which trip is involved.
Urgent cancellation corrections must be reported directly to the taxi in question.
Transport planning
Transportation is planned to be safe, economical and appropriate.
Public transport is primarily used for transport (no obstruction of regular transport services). If this is not possible or another arrangement is more cost-effective, the municipality may arrange transport using chartered services (taxi, bus).
Only for justified reasons (statement) can a pupil be transported from their home address to school.
If it is not possible to arrange school transport for a pupil in any other appropriate manner, the guardian may be paid an escort allowance when they transport or escort the child to school or pre-school. The escort allowance is based on the cheapest public transport fare. The granting of the escort allowance is considered on a case-by-case basis.
School transport is organised in a timely manner (Basic Education Act, Section 32).
- if the time spent by a pre-school/primary school pupil travelling to school, including waiting time, does not exceed 2.5 hours
- if the time spent by a secondary school pupil travelling to school, including waiting time, does not exceed three hours.
Decision-making
- School secretaries and the office secretary responsible for school transport are responsible for the practical arrangements for transport.
- Decisions on granting school transport are made by head teachers and the head of education (schools other than those in Tuusula).
- In early childhood education, the head of teaching decides on the granting of transport for pre-school education.
- The head teacher/head of teaching decides on temporary school transport, for example due to illness or accident, on the basis of a medical certificate.
