In the event of an accident at school

The pupil’s guardian is usually responsible for arranging the pupil’s medical care. Sudden illnesses at school are dealt with through the school health service. In the event of an accident

involving a pupil or student, the school will submit a claim to the insurance company as soon as possible (within one week of the accident occurring). Protector manages the personal injury insurance policies for the municipality of Tuusula.

Accidents

In the event of an accident at school or in connection with schoolwork, first aid is provided by the school nurse or a doctor, if they are present, and, failing that, by a teacher.

If an accident requires a visit to a doctor, you should seek treatment as soon as possible. You can seek treatment at a health centre, an out-of-hours service, an accident and emergency department or any private healthcare facility nearest to you. If a specific treatment has been recommended in the private sector to treat an illness or injury, you should check in advance with Protecor whether it is eligible for reimbursement, using the E-medical certificate issued by your doctor.

Insurance for schoolchildren

Tuusula Municipality has taken out insurance cover for pupils attending school in Tuusula and for upper secondary school pupils. A school representative must submit an accident report online via the ‘Group Accident’ section on the Protector website,(switch to another service) based on the information provided by the teacher or supervisor. The claim must be submitted as soon as possible after the accident, but no later than one week afterwards.

A child’s guardian or an adult student can claim compensation for expenses arising from an accident directly from Protector online, by telephone or by email. You will need to have your policy number and the beneficiary’s bank account number to hand when making a claim.

The policy number is 3198169.

The insurance is valid worldwide for the activities listed below, provided that the local authority is the main organiser of those activities:

  • activities carried out in accordance with the pre-primary and primary school curriculum, including practical work experience, school camps and class trips,
  • in morning and afternoon care,
  • in day care,
  • in youth and club activities and
  • at camps and on outings.

The insurance provides cover in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policy:

  • public and private sector services; for follow-up treatment, a separate payment commitment must be obtained from the insurance company to cover the costs of private treatment,
  • medical expenses in the private or public sector with no excess,
  • in the event of an accident, reasonable travel expenses for medical examinations and treatment,
  • medicines and
  • eyeglasses and helmets broken in an accident – this requires an accident that has necessitated medical treatment.

Dental accidents

In the event of a dental accident or toothache, please contact the dentist responsible for the school’s pupils. Treatment is free of charge for schoolchildren under the age of 19 who live in Tuusula.

Cases of illness at school

If a pupil falls ill at school, the school will contact the pupil’s parent or guardian. If the teacher is unable to reach the parent or guardian, they may, if necessary, contact the school nurse or a doctor at the nearest health centre.

Any costs arising from a pupil’s illness are to be paid by the guardian. Health insurance covers part of the costs in accordance with general regulations. However, to receive reimbursement, a certificate from healthcare staff is required, for example, confirming the need for a taxi or an ambulance.

It is advisable to keep the pupil’s guardian’s home and work telephone numbers up to date so that they can be contacted in the event of, for example, accidents or illness.

Absences

In accordance with the National Core Curriculum, the education provider and the school are obliged to monitor pupils’ absences. In Tuusula, the ‘Measures to be taken in the event of a pupil’s absence’ operating model is used to monitor absences.

ProKoulu

The ProKoulu operating model is in use in Tuusula’s primary and lower secondary schools. Each school has its own ProKoulu team, which oversees the implementation of ProKoulu activities at its own school.

At ProKoulu, the school’s organisational culture, teachers’ educational expertise and the guidance of pupils’ behaviour are developed on the basis of research evidence. ProKoulu has jointly agreed behavioural expectations, and achieving these is guided primarily through positive feedback. Shared behavioural expectations and jointly agreed operating principles strengthen the school’s sense of community and well-being across the whole school.

Further information on the ProKoulu model is available on the Niilo Mäki Institute’s website.

Support for parenting from family support workers in primary schools

A family counsellor supports primary school-aged children and their families with the challenges of everyday life, parenting and school. The aim of the work is to strengthen the family’s resources and well-being.

Family counselling is a low-threshold service that does not require a referral. The family counsellor works in collaboration with the family, the school and other relevant parties.

The aim is to arrange support from a family counsellor as quickly as possible, and this does not constitute a social services case. You can contact a family counsellor by telephone or via Wilma.
