The measures taken at the Jokela ponds have been the subject of much discussion among residents recently. Now that the whooper swans living on the ponds are about to migrate, the residents of Jokela are concerned about the future of the swans’ habitat. However, the ponds in Jokela will continue to be a diverse habitat for swans and other birds.

The park areas where the ponds are located will be managed on the basis of a long-term action plan completed in 2020, with more detailed park-specific plans being drawn up. The plans will be made available to residents on the Tuusula municipal website, and comments can be submitted during the viewing period. The most recent of these was the draft plan for the renovation of the Koululampi park area, which was on display from 2 to 15 October 2025. The renovation of Koululammenpuisto Park is planned to be carried out in 2026. The

aim of the action plan is to create a high-quality environment for residents to enjoy and to support birdlife and biodiversity. Some areas, such as the northern end of Koululampi and Apteekinlampi, will be subject to measures that support recreational use. Other areas will remain peaceful nesting sites for birds.

Based on the action plan, measures have been implemented including the renovation of the Jokela swimming beach and Apteekinlampi pond, the creation of a winter swimming spot at Koululampi pond, and the removal of the harmful invasive species Canadian waterweed from Koululampi pond. Over the years, maintenance measures have been carried out at the swan nesting pond, Ventoniemenlammi, such as removing trees that fall into the water and bushes that spread onto the paths. At present, there are no plans for dredging or other additional measures at Ventoniemenlammi or the adjacent ponds.

Thanks to their richly diverse environment, the Jokela ponds form a valuable bird habitat. In addition to swans, the area is home to teals, goldeneyes, moorhens, black-throated divers and common terns, among others. The action plan was drawn up in cooperation with stakeholders in the field, such as the Central Uusimaa Environment Centre and Birdlife Finland, taking into account the diversity of bird species.
