Children’s Museum Festival programme 2025:

Children’s Museum Day will be celebrated at the Tuusulanjärvi museums in Ainola, Ahola, Halosenniemi, Lottamuseo, Erkkola and Aleksis Kivi’s death cottage. The Kirre mobile library will also be present at the Halosenniemi car park. This year, you can ride there on your own hobby horse! There will be obstacle courses, skill competitions and other horse-related fun. If you don’t have your own horse, don’t worry, the museums’ hobby horses are waiting for riders. You can also make yourself a victory wreath at the museums.

Free admission to museums for children and adults accompanying them. The programmes are free of charge.

1. Ahola, former home of visual artist Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and author Juhani Aho

10 a.m.–5 p.m. Ahola is a museum dedicated to writer Juhani Aho and painter Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. 

Päistikka duo concert in the courtyard

At 11 a.m. The Päistikka duo, awarded Children’s Music Makers of the Year 2024, will take you on an adventure into a world of imagination with their joyful concert. Who is making all that noise underground? What happens when the floor is lava? This show, filled with music and stories, also needs the audience’s help at times.  

Stable and obstacle course

outside all day long. Come and take care of Ahola’s hobby horses or bring your own hobby horse and try out Ahola’s obstacle course.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Can you find all the checkpoints inside Ahola at the exhibition?

Art workshop

10 a.m.–5 p.m. Crafting your own prize rosette for the stick.  

2. Ainola, Aino and Jean Sibelius’s home museum

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come and visit the Jean and Aino Sibelius Home Museum. 

Stick track and rose crafting

11 a.m.–4 p.m. Make a rose for your own stick or soft toy friend. The craft station is located in front of the Ainola visitor centre, and we will provide all the materials you need. 

Try the horse track! The museum has five horses available for loan, but you can bring your own. Horses are not allowed inside the museum; they will wait on the museum terrace while you visit. 

Crafting with pine cones 

12 noon–2 p.m. Which animal would you like to make? The craft station is located in front of the Ainola visitor centre, and we will provide all the materials you need. 

Guided tours for children at Ainola on Museum Day

At 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. No advance registration required, space for the first 25 participants. Children are the responsibility of their parents or guardians while in the museum and museum grounds. 

Self-guided orienteering all day long

Pick up a map at the museum ticket office. 

Become an artist

Borrow an art bag from the museum ticket office and draw in the garden and forest. Retu the bag by 4:30 p.m. at the latest. 

Café Aulis

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The café is open all day.

3. Halosenniemi: Artist Pekka Halonen and his family’s studio home

Visit Halosenniemi

10 a.m.–5 p.m. Visit the Halonen Artists’ Home Museum. The summer exhibition Under the Paris Sky features paintings by Pekka Halonen and other artists from their time in Paris.

Art workshop on the patio and in the yard

10 a.m.–5 p.m. Let’s paint details and views of August nature. Did you find a beautiful stone, tree or flower in the yard? Did a frog hop by, or do the potato stalks look like something out of a painting? Come and see what kind of artwork your observations can inspire.

Bustle in the garden

10 a.m.–5 p.m. You can participate in the harvest. Look for fairies, gnomes and signs of their dwellings hidden in the garden. For horse riders, the garden is a peaceful place for cross-country riding. 

Mobile library at the Kirre Halosenniemi car park

10 a.m.–5 p.m. A hobbyist will demonstrate how to make hobby horses. Instruction manuals for making hobby horses will be on display, as well as books about horses and ponies and a horse-themed task, with a book prize to be raffled among
the participants. Bring your library card if you want to borrow materials.

4. Lotta Museum and museum café Lottakanttiini

Visit the Lotta Museum

10 a.m.–5 p.m. The exhibitions at the Lotta Museum introduce visitors to the history of the Lotta women and their ways of helping and taking responsibility.

Tammitonttu Törö and good deeds – story time and crafts

At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The story of Tammitonttu Törö and good deeds is a feel-good story by Satutäti about feelings and kindness. Tammitonttu Törö faces various challenges and solves them with wit. The story features old objects and teaches kindness and good deeds. Duration approx. 15 minutes. The performance includes music and crafts by Seed Art Studio. 

Törö’s magic ink trail (non-stop)

3:00–3:45 p.m. Come along with Tammitonttu Törö and lea how Törö makes delicate natural inks. Along the way, you will lea about the exciting stages of Törö’s ink production, and if you wish, you can make your own Törö magic ink at home. 

Lotta Museum’s stick horse track and crafts

The location is next to the playground. Bring your own horse or borrow one from the Lotta Museum information desk. Sirkka, Käthy and Gunnar are eagerly awaiting their tu on the obstacle course!   

Have fun with the Summer Pass in the museum garden. You can pick up your pass at the museum information desk!  

Museum café Lottakanttiini

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Delicious lunch (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and other treats available!  

5. Erkkola: art exhibitions in the former home of poet J. H. Erkko

Visit Erkkola

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The summer exhibition Haihtuvaista (Transient) features art by Emmi Kallio, Katja Tukiainen and Kirsti Tuokko. Joy and sorrow go hand in hand in this exhibition. Fleeting moments of happiness and the transience of everything are present together. There is also a lot of pink, girl power, and you can even find soap bubbles in the paintings!

Horse herding task track

10 a.m.–5 p.m. Take your horse to the pasture on a trail inspired by J. H. Erkko’s pastoral poetry. As a reward, you can make a rosette. You can bring your own hobby horse or borrow one from us. The trail can also be completed without a horse.

Giant soap bubbles

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Make giant soap bubbles at the self-service station.

The Baking Ladies

Selling festive treats during the event. The café serves juice, coffee, tea, and savoury and sweet snacks.

6. Aleksis Kivi’s death cottage: Our national author lived in this cottage for the last 10 months of his life.

Visit Aleksis Kivi’s death cottage

10am–5pm. Discover the last home of Finland’s national author and his modest life as a crofter.

Poetry co er in the yard

10 a.m.–5 p.m. Hopoti kop. Come and write your words on a piece of fabric and hang it on the poetry wall. The wind will carry your words along the paths of the skies. Write a poem of praise for your beloved therapy horse, your own pony, or even the joy of riding.

Seven Brothers – Adventure Orienteering

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The adventure begins at Aleksis Kivi’s death cottage and leads towards the nearby Fjällbo Park. The orienteering course includes checkpoints, some of which feature small tasks. The story of the seven brothers also comes to life through audio tracks, which you can listen to on site using your own mobile device. The audio tracks can be accessed using a QR code.
