The goal of carbon neutrality

The overall goal of the Tuusula municipal organisation is to achieve carbon neutrality in terms of direct and indirect emissions, work-related travel, waste, leased vehicles and taxi travel by 2035 at the latest. For indirect emissions, the goal is to reduce emissions by 70% from 2021 levels by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

Companies involved in climate work

The municipality of Tuusula aims to help companies with climate work in three ways. The municipality organises training events for companies, presenting concrete examples of the national Commitment 2050 service, i.e. ways to reduce emissions and create sustainable development, and how to communicate this.

The second measure is the implementation of infrastructure
projects that enable companies to reduce their emissions. This is an ongoing measure, which aims to prioritise projects and measures that
enable companies to reduce their emissions or remove obstacles to doing so.

The third measure conce s the preparation and implementation of climate-related topics in corporate dialogue.

Residents involved in climate work

In cooperation with residents, the municipality aims to improve the conditions for climate-smart living, share information and exchange peer knowledge.

The municipality is working with residents to identify climate-related issues in housing and incorporate them into the resident advisory service launched in Tuusula.

The municipality of Tuusula is producing illustrative materials on the target level of climate-smart living for land use planning, land transfer, construction projects and building control.

Air quality tips for every home

Housing accounts for just over a quarter of the average Finn’s carbon footprint. Find climate tips that suit you!

Tips for living:

  • Consider your actual space requirements when purchasing a new home and avoid unnecessary square metres.
  • Lower the indoor temperature, especially in rooms that are not in use and when you are not at home. Lowering the temperature by one degree saves 5% energy.
  • Choose water-efficient household appliances.
  • Conserve hot water. Repair leaky plumbing fixtures and avoid running water unnecessarily.
  • Adjust the ventilation and replace the filters annually. It is advisable to vacuum the filters regularly.
  • Defrost and vacuum refrigerators regularly.
  • New door and window seals. Draughts increase the feeling of cold and heat loss.
  • Do not cover radiators with curtains or fu iture.
  • Invest in a functional recycling point and a sufficient number of collection containers. The neighbourhood can, for example, purchase a shared paper and plastic collection container.
  • Only make essential purchases.
  • Choose recycled and eco-labelled products.
  • Repair broken products yourself or utilise professionals and companies in the field.
  • Tools, sewing machines and other equipment can also be borrowed from friends and neighbours.
  • Ventilate quickly and efficiently.
  • Wash quickly. A two-minute shower uses 1 kilowatt hour of energy, the same amount as a refrigerator uses in 40 hours.
  • Only wash full loads.
  • Favour light and public transport.

Increasing biodiversity

You can contribute to maintaining biodiversity in various ways:

  • Keep the green area as large as possible and avoid impermeable surfaces such as asphalt.
  • Utilise green roofs and rain gardens to delay rainwater runoff. Collect rainwater for irrigation.
  • Have a variety of plants in your garden, go for multi-layered vegetation, and let your lawn get mossy.
  • Increase the amount of deadwood.
  • Establish a flowering butterfly garden and insect hotel.
  • Dispose of garden waste correctly.
  • Extend the interval between mowing your lawn. This will allow at least some of the honey plants to flower.
  • Save flowering natural trees and shrubs, such as rowans, willows, bird cherries, rowans, spruces and rowans.
  • Favour native plants and local varieties over exotic o amental plants.
  • Leave the driest part of the lawn uncut. Mow it at the end of summer, when the wildflowers have gone to seed.
  • Suggest planting boxes for the courtyard or roof of your housing association. Help increase the municipality's farming opportunities.
