Climate change is the most serious global phenomenon of our time. Uncontrolled global warming will lead to a radical deterioration in living conditions on Earth. Therefore, we must strive to mitigate global warming through joint action, including at the municipal level. Decisions made by municipalities in areas such as procurement, land use planning, construction, waste management and energy production have a significant impact on climate work. In Tuusula, greenhouse gas emissions are already on a downward trend, hopefully. Measures contributing to this include the use of 100% renewable electricity, continuous improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings and the creation of 100 hectares of nature conservation areas. The HINKU network of municipalities has been created to promote climate action in municipalities. The network currently has more than 60 municipalities across Finland. Tuusula should follow the example of many other municipalities, show bold leadership and strive to become a responsible, active climate actor. By joining HINKU, we are creating an atmosphere in which Tuusula emphasises innovation and new technology and is transitioning to renewable energy. At the same time, savings can be made and the municipality’s image can be made more attractive and interesting to new residents and businesses. The Ministry of the Environment’s Sustainable City programme also helps in the move towards a carbon-neutral municipality. Applications are now open. The Sustainable City programme, coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment programme, coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, is launching a call for applications, specifically seeking cities and municipalities with 10,000–100,000 inhabitants to participate in a project that promotes the integration of sustainable development goals and their monitoring into city and municipal strategies. The project will start in 2019 and run until the end of 2020.
