Restoring street activities in Tuusula

The worrying behaviour of our young people has sparked much debate among local residents. Substance abuse among young people (cannabis, alcohol and medicines) has increased again.  This can be seen, for example, at the sports centre and beaches, where the emergency services regularly attended incidents involving young people under the influence of drugs last summer. Disruptive behaviour by young people in shopping centres has also increased. There are many young people who are not affected by these problems, but it is good to address them before they increase and become more frequent. The increase in substance abuse has also been noted in our welfare plan for 2022-2025 and in school surveys.  The police, rescue services, youth services and social services are working well together on these issues, but this is not enough; coordinated voluntary work is also needed.

Tuusula previously had a KATU group, which was established in 1989 in cooperation with Kerava and Järvenpää. KATU groups later operated independently in their own municipalities.  The activities were coordinated by a special youth worker and involved young volunteers and adults. KATU activities have been discontinued in our municipality, but I feel that it is now necessary to revive them.

I propose that the need for KATU activities in Tuusula be investigated and that the activities be revived and restarted.
