Working life demands more and more from our minds, and our performance-oriented society tests the resilience of us all. Mental health disorders are increasingly causing incapacity for work, with more than half of disability pensions being granted on mental health grounds. Between 20 and 25 per cent of Finnish adults suffer from mental health challenges each year, but only half of them dare to talk about them at work. Mental health problems are the single biggest cause of sick leave in the workplace, with mental health-related sick leave increasing by almost 50% in recent years. The costs associated with mental health disorders amount to approximately €11.1 billion per year. Mental health issues cause the Finnish workforce to lose more than 17 million working days each year.

The Mental Health Network brings Finnish companies and communities together to tackle mental health challenges in the workplace. The network was founded by ten Finnish companies, central organisations, employers’ associations and mental health organisations. Mielenturvaa is a network that offers support, training and coaching to solve mental health challenges in the workplace. The network challenges every Finnish work community to work towards this important cause, to strengthen mental health and to offer more comprehensive mental health services.

We, the undersigned representatives, demand that the municipality of Tuusula join the Mental Health Network, implement the Good Workplace Plan that is part of the network, and adopt the Mental Health model to strengthen the mental health of its employees. It is financially beneficial for the municipality to invest in strengthening mental health, as it reduces sick leave and the risk of disability pensions, which incur significant costs.
