Urgent improvement of the well-being of Lake Tuusula
The Tuusula Homeowners’ Association has closely monitored the health of Lake Tuusula and the restoration work carried out. Planning and implementing water purification in catchment areas, seine fishing and oxygenation are good methods, but they are not sufficient for cleaning the lake. In our opinion, one important measure is still missing: the continuous oxygenation of deep basins that are almost devoid of oxygen and the reduction of nutrients.
We propose that a pipe be built from the oxygen-depleted deep pool under the Koskenmäki bridge to the Tuusulanjoki river. According to the laws of physics, water can be lifted from the depression along the pipe by gravity if its discharge end is below the surface of the lake. The flow can be restricted by means of a control valve installed at the end of the pipe. The removal of oxygen-depleted water works all year round and does not require any power.
The costs mainly consist of the pipe, which must have a sufficiently large diameter of approximately 315 mm. In addition, there are costs for labour and weights for anchoring the pipe. The cost estimate for a layman is approximately €200,000. The benefits include improved oxygen levels in the lake and the disappearance of algae from the lake.
The measures proposed in this initiative have been implemented at Iso-Lehmijärvi in Hämeenkyrö. There, Onni Issakainen has put the idea into practice and restored his cottage lake to near-pristine condition. Our association’s board has been in contact with Issakainen and informed him of the problem with Lake Tuusulanjärvi. According to him, the idea works for all lakes. All other means should be used to help, but not chemicals. He welcomed us to visit Iso-Lehmijärvi. More information on the history of the lake’s restoration can be found on the website of the Hämeenkyrö Iso-Lehmijärvi Protection Association.
The Tuusula Homeowners’ Association proposes the implementation of measures in accordance with its initiative.
