The current status of ice route maintenance
Friday 13 March 2026:
Thank you for the 2025/26 season – the ice route on Lake Tuusula will officially close this evening, 13 March 2026.
At 6 pm, a ‘105 Candles’ event will be held at the Tuusula War Graves and in Kaukjärvi Park to commemorate the end of the Winter War. The programme includes the laying of a wreath, a guard of honour, a memorial service led by the vicar, a choir, and 105 candles on the ice, symbolising the duration of the war.
Dear user of the ice route,
The 2025–2026 season on the Tuusulanjärvi ice trail – the trail of good cheer – has come to an end. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to all the thousands of outdoor enthusiasts who made this season another unforgettable one. You were a brilliant bunch who followed the safety guidelines and enjoyed the beauty of the lake together throughout the winter.
Changes to maintenance:
We would like to inform you that official maintenance of the Tuusulanjärvi ice route, in terms of marking and upkeep, will cease on Friday 13 March. However, we will continue to monitor the ice conditions and provide updates on ice safety to all interested parties. You can follow the latest information and guidance on our channels.
Remember to stay safe!
As the route is no longer officially maintained, always remember to check the ice thickness yourself before venturing out onto the ice. The ice is still safe to walk on for the time being. However, ice conditions can change rapidly, so personal responsibility is key. Make sure you are properly equipped and stay alert to your surroundings.
Thank you and goodbye!
We’d like to thank everyone who visited the trail this season and hope you enjoy the winter season to the full. We hope that this spirit of goodwill will live on in the winters to come.
Kind regards,
The Ice Patrol
– Tuusulanjärvi Ice Route Maintenance Team

Local authorities and the community are responsible for maintaining the ice route
The Lake Tuusula ice route is an area designed for a wide range of outdoor activities and exercise. The ice route is maintained in collaboration with Tuusula Municipality, the City of Järvenpää and the Jäähavaintomiehet community. The City of Järvenpää is responsible for ploughing at the northern end of the lake, and the Municipality of Tuusula at the southern end. Conditions on the lake vary every winter, and all route markings are for guidance only. Winter maintenance of the lake requires the ice to have a minimum thickness of 15 centimetres (for quad bikes and snowmobiles), whilst larger vehicles require a thickness of 25 centimetres (small tractors and other equipment).
Tuusula Leisure Services and the ‘Jäähavaintomiehet’ community provide daily updates on the condition of the lake.
