Books on display on the library table

The self-service library is part of the services offered by Tuusula Municipal Library.

When a customer obtains a library card for the Tuusula Library or another Kirkes library, they agree to comply with all rules and regulations governing the use of the library and their appendices.

1. What does self-service library mean in general?

A self-service library is a library space equipped with a system that allows customers to use the library independently. Self-service libraries offer limited services. Customers can also access the library space outside normal opening hours if they have a Kirkes library card and a valid PIN code.

During self-service hours, there are no staff members present in the library, and the premises are equipped with recording cameras and access control. The self-service library is a peaceful space, the use of which is based on community spirit, trust and commitment to common rules. It is for all customers, and consideration and safety are essential when using it.

2. Logging in and out

During self-service hours, you can log in to the library using the login devices located at the library entrance with a valid Kirkes library card and PIN code. You can obtain a library card and PIN code during service hours at any Kirkes library by proving your identity. The library card is personal.

Everyone who visits the self-service library must log in with their own library card.

Do not let strangers in the library when you open the door. As a family, i.e. together with a guardian or library card guarantor, children (under 15 years of age) may visit the self-service library without their own library card. The guardian/guarantor is responsible for the actions of family members they allow to enter the self-service library.

The start and end of self-service hours are announced via voice guidance/public address system in the library. Customers must sign in using the door entry devices at the start of self-service hours and leave the library when it closes at the end of self-service hours. When self-service hours end and the library closes, the library’s normal burglar alarm system is activated.

3. What you can do in the library during self-study hours

At the self-service library, you can borrow and return materials using the machines, pick up reservations, use the customer computers, read newspapers or other materials, and work or hold small meetings. Wireless internet is available. During service hours, library staff are on hand to assist customers with using the self-service library.

If there are any problems with borrowing, returning or reserving items, the customer is obliged to clarify any uncertainties with the staff during service hours. Until then, the customer is responsible for the materials registered on their library card.

E-materials, magazines and other collections available on site are accessible. Returned materials can also be borrowed. Library services that require staff assistance are not available during self-service hours. These services include, for example, payment of fees, obtaining a new library card or PIN code, printing and copying, and information services.

During self-service hours, public meetings or events as defined in the Public Meetings Act (1257/1999) may not be held in the library unless they have been specifically agreed upon with the library.

4. Responsibilities and obligations

The Kirkes Library rules apply during self-service hours. Customers agree to follow the self-service library rules too. Customers are responsible for paying for any damage they cause. The guardian of a child under the age of 15 is responsible for the use of the self-service library with the child’s library card. Compensation for damages is governed by the Kirkes library rules and the Tort Liability Act (412/1974).

The customer has the right and obligation to ensure that no other persons enter the library without logging into the system when opening the door. Allowing family members to enter is mentioned in section 2. Logging in and out.

The library is a public space where the Public Order Act (612/2003) applies. Under the Public Order Act, the following are also prohibited during self-service hours in the library:

  • substance abuse
  • disturbing the peace, for example by making noise
  • behaviour that threatens another person, either physically or verbally
  • possession of substances suitable for vandalism.

Each user is responsible for promoting cleanliness, comfort and safety in the library. The security service and police emergency numbers are displayed on the notice board in the library, which customers can contact if necessary. If you have any issues, please leave feedback/a request for clarification in the customer feedback box or send an email. Feedback will be dealt with during office hours.

You must leave the library premises immediately when the library closes at the end of self-service hours. Remaining in the premises will trigger an alarm. You will be liable for the costs of any alarm triggered by your actions.

Violation of the library’s rules of use and public order may result in suspension of access to the self-service library. Violations will be reported to the police if necessary.

In the case of underage customers, the library will contact their guardian. The guardian or library card guarantor may, if they wish, ask the library to block the library card of customers under the age of 15 from logging into the self-service library.

5. The premises are equipped with recording access control and camera surveillance.

The self-service library premises are equipped with access control and camera surveillance, which constitute a personal data register as defined in the Personal Data Act (523/1999). The register is maintained by the municipality of Tuusula.

The head of library services and those authorised by them have the right to review the contents of surveillance recordings. Other library staff may also view real-time images from surveillance cameras.

The rules for using Kirkes libraries, the rules for Tuusula’s self-service library and the register descriptions can be read at the library and on the Tuusula municipal website.
