Sports coaching programme in basic education
Together with local sports clubs, we offer a sports coaching programme that supports competitive athletes (licensed athletes) in their schooling and development as athletes.

This is a sports coaching class, not a physical education class. Sports coaching classes may have students other than those in the sports coaching programme.
The sports coaching programme works
- At the Rykmentinpuisto comprehensive school
- At Riihikallio Comprehensive School
- At Hyrylä School (Hyrylä)
- At the Jokela school centre (Jokela)
- At the Kellokoski school centre (Kellokoski).
On an athlete’s path, during the youth and selection phase, the quality factors of childhood develop into success factors that enable peak performance; enthusiasm grows into passion, versatile physical skills are refined into strong sports skills, good trainability is refined into systematic training, and an athletic lifestyle creates the conditions for growth into a healthy athlete. The starting point for everything is the ethical principles of fair play in sport. (Olympic Committee)
In autumn 2018, Tuusula’s sports coaching programme was approved as a framework municipality for the activities of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Sports Academy (URHEA) under the Finnish Olympic Committee.
The aim of the programme is to
- promote the growth of students who participate in sports into goal-oriented athletes
- develop skills and expertise in different areas
- support young people in combining sports and school, for example in terms of time management
- develop and strengthen cooperation between the municipality and clubs.
General information about the sports coaching programme
- In Year 7, there are two hours of physical education per week and two hours of sports training organised by the club per week.
- In Year 8, there are three hours of physical education per week, two hours of general training per week and two hours of sports training organised by the club per week.
- In Year 9, there are two hours of physical education per week, two hours of general training per week and two hours (possibly four) of sports training organised by the club per week.
- In grades 8–9, it is also possible to choose optional physical education to increase physical activity during the school week.
In the eighth and ninth grades, the optional subject general training is excluded from other optional subjects.
Athletes’ contract
Students participating in URHEA commit to the rules of the athlete agreement. The athlete agreement is signed at the student’s school.
Termination of the sports coaching programme
If a student withdraws from the sports training programme and there are applicants on the waiting list for the class, the student will change classes and a student from the waiting list may be selected to replace them.
Exclusion from the sports coaching programme
If an athlete fails to show respect for the school’s activities or demonstrates poor motivation for attending school and studying, corrective measures will be discussed and agreed upon with the athlete. If the corrective measures do not help, the student will be denied the right to participate in mo ing training for a specified period of time.
Students in the sports coaching programme are expected to actively participate in both mo ing training and general coaching lessons. If a student’s level of motivation in the sports coaching programme is insufficient or their behaviour at school is inappropriate, they will be excluded from the programme.

Aptitude test
The aptitude test is a national aptitude test recommended by the Olympic Committee for upper secondary schools with a focus on physical education and sports upper secondary schools.
Aptitude test sections:
- Movement skills and speed 8 points
- Sustainability 8 points
- Power 8 points
- Balance skills and rhythm 8 points
- Mobility 8 points
- Equipment handling skills 8 points
- Optional school-specific section 8 points.
The maximum score for the aptitude test is 6 x 8 = 48 points. The municipality
of Tuusula organises a municipality-specific test section. In this case, the weakest test section 1–6 is disregarded. The municipality-specific section is always a mandatory part of the assessment.
Check out Tuusula’s municipality-specific aptitude test!
The aim of the optional aptitude test is to measure the applicant’s motor skills through the use of equipment. The
equipment used on the ball track is also familiar from school physical education classes.
The test consists of the following items:
- Eye-hand coordination: The measured time starts here. In the test, the ball is carried with both the right and left hand. Carrying the ball around the cones, stopping in front of the wall and throwing the ball at the wall. Throwing the ball at the wall and catching it. Retu ing to the starting point.
- Handling the ball with a floorball stick, handling the equipment: The measured time continues from here. The task is to carry the ball with a floorball stick around the cones, stop in front of the goal and shoot the ball into the goal. Retu to the starting point.
- Foot coordination and agility, handling the equipment with your feet: The measured time continues from here. The task is to carry the football around the cones. Stop in front of the wall and kick the ball against the wall with the inside of your foot. Control the ball after it rebounds from the wall and retu to the starting point. The time measurement ends here.
The test measures time, but at the same time requires the above conditions to be met. Scoring is based on the time taken.
The scoring is as follows.
Girls:
- < 28: 8 points
- 28.1–30.1: 7 points
