Accidents, illnesses and medication in early childhood education
Children are insured during early childhood education and pre-school hours, as well as during any immediate travel related to these activities. The insurance also covers other activities included in the curriculum, such as field trips. With regard to medication and illnesses, we follow the guidelines issued by the welfare services.

Accidents
In the event of an accident in early childhood education, first aid is provided by the daycare staff, if possible. Guardians are notified of the accident immediately. Guardians are primarily responsible for taking the child to receive treatment. In early childhood education, we can transport the child to public healthcare if necessary in the event of an accident. An accident report will be submitted to the insurance company as soon as possible (within a week of the accident). The Tuusula municipality’s personal injury insurance policies are with Protector.
If an accident requires a visit to the doctor, seek treatment as soon as possible. Treatment can be sought at a health centre, emergency room, first aid station or any private healthcare facility closest to you. The guardian must first pay for the visit themselves and then apply for reimbursement in accordance with the instructions below. If a specific treatment in the private sector has been recommended for the illness or injury, the insurance company must be contacted in advance to clarify whether the treatment is covered, using the E-medical certificate issued by the doctor.

Illnesses and medication
If your child falls ill
Contagiousness is highest at the onset of the illness, so children should stay home as soon as the first symptoms appear. If a child becomes ill during early childhood education, the daycare staff will contact the guardians. The child should be picked up as soon as possible.
In early childhood education, we follow the nationally issued THL guidelines and recommendations on infectious diseases under the guidance of the welfare sector.

Medication in early childhood education
First and foremost, children’s medication should always be administered at home. Caregivers should ask their doctor to prescribe long-acting medication for their child, if possible, which can be administered at home before or after the early childhood education day.
However, if medication is also required during early childhood education, a written medication plan must always be drawn up for the child. The child’s medication plan must be drawn up before the child starts receiving medication in early childhood education. The child’s medication plan is attached to the child’s early childhood education plan.
The child’s medication plan is agreed upon with the child’s guardian and early childhood education staff for medication administered in early childhood education. The plan specifies, among other things, the medicines to be given to the child, matters related to the administration of the medicine, any monitoring and measures related to the medication, and the persons responsible for and acting as substitutes for the medication in early childhood education. Medicines to be administered to children in early childhood education are brought to the daycare centre in their original packaging, together with dosage instructions.
The child’s guardian has a key responsibility for both the flow of information and ensuring that the daycare staff are adequately familiarised with the child’s medication. It is the guardian’s duty to ensure that the necessary information regarding the child’s medication is communicated from the child’s doctor to the early childhood education staff. Similarly, the guardian is also responsible for passing on information received from early childhood education staff to the child’s doctor.
The guardian participates in drawing up the child’s individual medication plan, in the child-specific training of staff administering medication, and is responsible for delivering medication to the daycare centre.
