This year, Osbu is for children.
Tuusulau0026#x27;s seventh participatory budgeting round will begin at the end of September. This time, decision-making power over the use of municipal funds will be given to children and young people under the age of 18.
The participatory budgeting (osbu) round in Tuusula, which will start in autumn 2025, is this time aimed at children and young people. As in previous rounds, the budget available is €200,000 and the implementation period is two years.
Tuusula currently has approximately 8,400 residents under the age of 18. Participatory budgeting aimed at children and young people enables them to have their voices heard in creating a pleasant and prosperous Tuusula. The upcoming round is also strongly linked to Tuusula’s work as a child-friendly municipality. The participatory budgeting process has been developed in a child-friendly manner with children in the Power to Children workshops and together with a youth advisory group.
The round begins on 29 September–19 October with a multi-channel idea search. Anyone under the age of 18 can submit ideas either electronically or on paper. In the previous round, 860 ideas were received, of which approximately one third were submitted by children. Ideas can be submitted during the day at daycare centres and schools, as well as during the Osbu tour, when the municipality visits youth centres, the main library and other locations. Children attending schools in other localities and those who are cared for at home, for example, can also participate at these locations. The Osbu tour will start on 30 September at the main library in Hyrylä. The detailed schedule for the tour will be published in early September.
“It is important for us to be involved in the children’s Osbu as a place for brainstorming and voting, and it is great that the Osbu tour will start at the library. Supporting democracy and civic engagement are key tasks for libraries today, says Library Director Katri Rahkola. For many children and young people, the library is a familiar place where it is easy to come and participate in and influence matters in their home municipality.
The voting period will take place in 2026. Before that, experts will evaluate all the ideas and provide feedback on them. After that, the ideas will be further developed, and finally, they will be put to a vote in late spring 2026.
Let’s work together to make Tuusula a child-friendly municipality. We invite associations, communities and clubs to participate in the implementation of a tour aimed at children and young people. By participating, you can promote children’s opportunities to influence.
