Construction of the Ainola station underpass is set to begin
Construction work on the underpass and the surrounding streets will continue until the end of August 2027. Please be aware of the construction work when travelling in the area, whether for work or leisure.
As part of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s Helsinki–Riihimäki railway project, construction is set to begin on the underpass at Ainola station in Järvenpää. The new underpass will provide a faster, barrier-free route between the new platforms at Ainola and a new footpath and cycle path linking the Ainola regional centre and the Lepola area.
The construction of the underpass marks a further step in the development of Ainola station. The station’s new eastern platform was opened at the end of 2024, and construction of the new western platform is in its final stages. The western platform will be opened in August 2026.
“The underpass at Ainola station will make everyday life smoother for train passengers and those travelling in the area. Movement between platforms will be streamlined, as the new underpass provides a direct link from one platform to another and reduces journey times. At the same time, the station’s accessibility will be improved thanks to the lift connections. The underpass will serve both pedestrians and cyclists,” says Riitta Parviainen, project manager at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is building the underpass in collaboration with the City of Järvenpää. In addition, the City of Järvenpää is constructing roads in the area in connection with the underpass.
Construction work on the underpass and the associated streets will continue until the end of August 2027. Construction work will take place on both sides of the railway line. The works will increase heavy traffic in the area and will also cause temporary noise, due to, amongst other things, the construction of a temporary retaining wall and piling work. The noisiest stages of the work will take place on weekdays between 7 am and 6 pm, with the majority of them scheduled for July–September 2026. Safe routes will be provided for pedestrians and cyclists to pass the construction sites.
