The aim of UNICEF’s Child-Friendly Municipality model, which progresses in stages, is to help municipalities make the right decisions for children’s well-being in municipal administration and everyday services for children, and to promote the rights of the most vulnerable children in particular. Our municipality, which is currently a candidate, was selected for the model in December 2022.

The model is based in particular on the four general principles of children’s rights:

  • non-discrimination and equality
  • the best interests of the child
  • right to life and development
  • respecting children’s views and their right to participation.

Candidate for Child-Friendly Municipality

Between 2024 and 2026, we will develop Tuusula into an even more child-friendly municipality with the help of the five objectives set out in our action plan. These objectives will strengthen the integration of children’s rights into the structures of our municipality.

Our development work, progress towards our goals and reporting are coordinated by the Child-Friendly Municipality Coordination Group, which includes representatives from all sectors and, when invited, from the Tuusula Youth Council.

After 2026, we will work with UNICEF to assess whether we have achieved the next stage of the model, i.e. Child-Friendly Municipality recognition. Our jou ey together is just beginning – after possible recognition, we will continue to develop child-friendliness in accordance with the model together with UNICEF.
