Rantala outlined the development of Finnish music by playing examples from Finland and elsewhere in the world. The pianist gave an insightful explanation of the structure of piano music and played examples of improvised solos.

– Melancholy and sadness are part of Finnish music. We don’t think it’s sad, but beautiful, Rantala said at the concert.

Iiro Rantala’s piano concert was attended by 265 second-year students and 14 teachers from Keuda and Tuusula Upper Secondary School. The concert included preparatory assignments that helped the young people familiarise themselves with Rantala’s compositions, work and personality through Instagram and YouTube videos, for example.

“We wanted to include music in the secondary school cultural education plan to complement the Kultsuja programme in early childhood education and basic education,” explains cultural producer Jaana Hopeakoski.

Rantala spoke casually about his career and work as a musician. The young people were also given the opportunity to ask questions, and he was asked for advice on topics such as what to do if your family does not support your artistic career. The young people listened attentively to the concert, and as they left, one commented, “I didn’t know what to expect, but this was great!”

Tuusula is one of the first municipalities in Finland to implement a secondary-level cultural education plan. The aim of the plan is to open up new horizons for young people and enrich their everyday lives through culture. The activities enable young people to experience, participate in and create local culture. In addition to concerts, students in Tuusula can enjoy the Kult@Monio event, guided visits to libraries and museums, lectures and free courses at Tuusula College.
