Does your property contain any protected buildings or buildings of cultural value?

The new Building Act, like the previous Land Use and Building Act, obliges property owners to take care of the condition of the buildings located on their property. Buildings protected in the town plan or classified in building inventories require special care.

The law requires property owners to maintain buildings in such a condition that they continuously meet health, safety and usability requirements.

Maintenance must also take into account the preservation of the building’s conservation values. If the property owner neglects their maintenance obligations, the building control authority may intervene by issuing a repair order.

Assistance with repair work

The Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment and the National Board of Antiquities distribute discretionary state subsidies for the renovation of old buildings of cultural value using traditional methods that are appropriate for the architecture of the site.

The National Board of Antiquities provides assistance to households, companies, associations and foundations. In addition to the above-mentioned entities, the ELY Centre also provides assistance to municipalities. Museums and their buildings have their own forms of assistance in other grant programmes run by the National Board of Antiquities.

Grants can be applied for to repair protected or otherwise valuable architectural heritage sites, buildings and structures. Grants are also readily available for repair projects involving more modern, post-war architectural heritage.

Grant applications are accepted once a year. The application period for ELY is usually in October–November. Information on application periods and detailed application instructions and conditions can be found on the websites of the organisations awarding the grants.

For advice on applying for grants and suitable projects, please contact Elina Riksman, renovation expert at the regional museum, on +358 40 194 1349 or +358 9 3102 8642, or by email at elina.riksman@hel.fi.
