Building Kymppi was constructed in 1862 as crew barracks. The building has approximately 750 square metres of floor space on one floor and has undergone many changes over the course of 160 years. In the 1940s, the building was divided into ten apartments. Later, it also housed the Varuskoto group daycare centre and the garrison dentist’s office. The log-framed building still stands proudly on Tuusulanväylä, next to the upper secondary school and the Monio cultural centre.

The building was named Building 10 in accordance with the naming practice used during the garrison era. The name ‘Kymppi’ will also be appropriate in the future, when the building will house facilities for language teaching at Tuusula College, the Taito School of Crafts and Design, and the Hyrylä Craft Centre.

At its meeting on 10 February 2025, the Tuusula Municipal Council approved the building project plan and its implementation with an updated floor plan and cost level. The renovation project and future space requirements were already known during the construction phase of Monio, but its location in the middle of the construction site made it impossible to continue the project at that time. Now the project can move forward, and the building’s potential uses will grow as a result.

The growing popularity of upper secondary school has further strengthened the need for daytime teaching facilities, particularly at Tuusula College. The craft facilities at Rapsikanmäki, on the other hand, are small and in need of renovation.

– Renovating Building Kymppi is a wonderful thing. Two magnificent log buildings from different eras in the same courtyard reinforce the historical layers of the area and give Hyrylä a unique identity. Above all, we will gain much-needed additional space for cultural activities and handicrafts, says Ulla Kinnunen, Director of Culture and Museums.

Before the new interior can be built, all the alterations made to Kymppi since the 1940s must be removed. At the same time, it has been noted that the building’s frame structures are well preserved, although the lowest log layers will have to be replaced. The old exterior cladding and windows will also be repaired and preserved. New, sound spaces that respect the age of the building will be constructed inside the old frame. The building will be taken into use during 2026.
