During Easter, work on the section of track between Kytömaa and Ainola will require a closure of two tracks. During the closure, between 3:15 p.m. on Saturday 19 April and 9:40 a.m. on Monday 21 April, trains will not stop at Ainola. The nearest station for passengers during the interruption is Järvenpää. No replacement bus services will be provided between Ainola and Järvenpää stations. As only one track will be in use at Ainola during the interruption, this will have some impact on local train timetables. More detailed changes to timetables can be found on VR’s travel search.

“During the Easter break, we will be carrying out earthworks on the track and in its immediate vicinity for a switch that will be installed later. The changes to train traffic caused by the work are regrettable. However, we have scheduled the break outside the busiest Easter travel times. I hope that these arrangements will minimise the disruption to train users. With this solution, we have specifically sought to minimise the inconvenience to those who use trains on a daily basis,” says Riitta Parviainen, Project Manager at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, describing the situation over Easter.

During the summer, construction work on the project will reduce traffic in Järvenpää and Saunakallio and reduce the number of train stops in Ainola.

In summer 2025, construction work carried out as part of the project will bring changes to train services in Ainola, Järvenpää and Saunakallio. The old western platform in Ainola, located along Lepolanväylä, will be out of use during the summer due to the work. In addition, safety device commissioning inspections in Järvenpää will affect the use of platforms not only in Ainola but also in Järvenpää and Saunakallio as follows:

“We will provide more detailed information about the arrangements in Ainola, Järvenpää and Saunakallio during the spring. We will strive to minimise disruptions to train traffic and focus on making it as easy as possible to move around the station areas. For example, the situation in Ainola is challenging for passengers if there is confusion about the train departure platform. Changing platforms at the last minute is not possible due to the long distance between them. We have therefore worked with various train operators to plan arrangements and communications for the spring and summer so that information and signage are as clear as possible for train passengers,” Parviainen continues.

Construction work between Purola and Nuppulinna will commence in spring 2025.

Construction of the additional tracks planned between Purola and Nuppulinna will begin in May 2025. Preliminary work related to the construction of additional tracks has already been carried out in the area, which has not affected train traffic. With the start of construction of the additional tracks, there will also be an impact on train traffic. More information will be provided later when the timing has been finalised.

The first phase of the project will be completed by the end of 2024. The second phase of construction will take place between 2021 and 2030, when additional tracks will be built between Kerava and Järvenpää and between Järvenpää and Jokela. A four-track section approximately 20 kilometres long will be built between Kerava and Jokela. In Kerava, the freight railway line will be extended from Sködvik to the Lahti direct line. An additional western track will be built from Hyvinkää towards Riihimäki to Arolammi. In addition, changes will be made to bridges, safety and electrical railway equipment, and noise control.

The Helsinki–Riihimäki railway project will create the conditions for smoother traffic on Finland’s busiest railway section, the main line. The project will be implemented in three phases, the first of which was completed at the end of 2024. The second phase of construction is underway between 2021 and 2030. The project is co-financed by the European Union.
