Summer artists are allowed to pursue their own artistic work during their employment. The work may be collaborative, performative or process-based art, depending on the nature of the art. Multidisciplinary and event-based public art projects are also possible. The artist’s work must be visible to the residents of Tuusula, and they must have the opportunity to participate in it.

When applying, the applicant should submit a preliminary work plan outlining what they wish to achieve as a summer artist. The specific tasks for the work period will be determined based on the artist’s ideas and methods in consultation with the employer.

Summer artists work in a team of cultural producers as part of the cultural services work community. In addition to a monthly salary, they have access to the support and expertise of the work community, a small production budget and standard office equipment.

The deadline for applications is 16 March 2025.

Summer artists are interesting

In previous years, Tuusula has hired literary artist Katariina Sarja (2022), visual artist Matti Sampela (2023) and circus artist Manta Näkkäläjärvi (2024) as summer artists.

The summer artists’ projects have attracted the interest of local residents, who have participated in them with an open mind. All previous projects have been very different in nature and have found their own audiences. For example, nearly 800 people participated in last summer’s circus workshops, most of whom were under 18 years of age, and Matti Sampela, the summer artist for 2023, was pleasantly surprised when 99 people decided to participate in the Unimuotokuvia (Sleep Portraits) project.

“The summer artist programme changed my life and gave my career a boost. By offering me the summer artist position, the municipality of Tuusula has genuinely had a huge impact on my development as an artist,” said Katariina Sarja, summer artist for 2022.
