Heinisuo is a drained peatland located north of Lake Rusutjärvi, which was established as a nature reserve in 2018 and is now covered with tall forest. As part of the project, a restoration plan was drawn up for the area in the spring, setting out objectives for improving the natural state of the bog. The restoration work now being carried out mainly involves damming old drainage ditches. The dams to be built in the ditches in the area to be restored will stop the flow of water in the ditches. Side ditches will be dug in connection with the dams to direct the flow of water away from the ditches to a wider area.

Restoration can be used to direct drainage water from densely wooded, boggy forests into natural watercourses and surface runoff. At the same time, this reduces the transport of nutrients and solids along drainage ditches to downstream water bodies. These measures also have positive effects on the restoration of the structural features and water balance of boggy forest habitats.

The drainage ditches will mainly be constructed by excavation, so caution should be exercised when using the paths in the area in early September. In some places, the construction of the ditches may also cause the paths to become waterlogged, which may hinder recreational use. As the area is restored, new paths will likely form over time in the most accessible locations.
