Aleksis Kivi Day is celebrated in Tuusula
Friday, 10 October, is Aleksis Kivi and Finnish Literature Day. In Tuusula, Aleksis Kivi is traditionally commemorated with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tuusula churchyard. Everyone is welcome to celebrate our national author. Aleksis Kiviu0026#x27;s death cottage will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in honour of the holiday.

In addition to Aleksis Kivi Day, 10 October is also celebrated as the Battle School’s traditional day. The joint celebrations begin at 10:00 with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tuusula churchyard. First, everyone will gather at the heroes’ graves, where the Combat School will pay its respects to the heroes’ statue. From there, the procession will move on to the grave of Aleksis Kivi.
Participants in the event include the municipality of Tuusula, the Combat School, the parish of Tuusula and the Student Union of the University of Helsinki. Schools and daycare groups are also welcome, as are anyone who wishes to commemorate our national author. In addition to laying flowers, you can also sing, recite poems and perform other programmes appropriate to the theme of the day – no speeches have been given at Aleksis Kivi’s grave. The Tuusula Male Choir will perform songs composed to the lyrics of Aleksis Kivi at the event.
Aleksis Kivi’s cottage, located on Rantatie in Tuusula, is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cottage will then close for the winter season and reopen in spring 2026.
