The seine fishing was carried out between 8 and 27 October by two fishermen. The largest single catch weighed as much as 1,630 kg and the smallest only 170 kg. A total of 25,000 kg of fish was caught from the lake, which is significantly less than the average catch obtained in management fishing between 2008 and 2024.

The seine net catch consisted almost exclusively of cyprinids. Roach and rudd accounted for 60 per cent of the total catch, and ide for 30 per cent. In addition, the seine net caught smelt, perch and burbot.

The catch also included predatory fish such as zander, perch and pike. A few eels were even found in the net. The fishermen returned nearly 7,000 predatory fish back to the lake.

The species composition of the fish population in the open water was monitored using two randomised test samples. Based on these, the lake’s whitefish stock appears to have declined. No whitefish were caught as by-catch either. Studies have shown that the pikeperch stock in Lake Tuusula varies greatly, and this year there were plenty of pikeperch fry, but few last summer.

The catch was available to fishermen free of charge, and demand was high. A total of 20,000 kg of the catch was collected, and only 5,000 kg was taken for composting.

Lake Tuusulanjärvi has been restored through management fishing since 1997. The lake’s fish stock is dominated by cyprinids, and the nutrient recycling caused by bream in particular can be very significant. Effective fishing of cyprinids reduces the amount of phosphorus recycled by fish and removes phosphorus bound in fish biomass. Fishing can reduce the nutrients that have already accumulated in the lake, but it does not replace the need to reduce the eutrophicating nutrient load entering the lake.
