Yesterday’s event included an ode to the new school, performed by the eighth-grade drama group. The ceremonial ribbon cutting was performed by Marianne Liimatainen, Director of Education in Tuusula, together with four students.

Deputy Mayor Arto Lindberg, who spoke at the ceremony on behalf of the municipality of Tuusula, stated that as a leading municipality in education, Tuusula wants to give children and young people a solid foundation for their future. High-quality facilities are a prerequisite for good teaching, and Riihikallio has a fine tradition in this regard, Lindberg reminded the audience.

Antti Lipsanen, CEO of U. Lipsanen Oy, speaking on behalf of the contractor, praised the excellent cooperation between the municipality and the builder.

The event also recognised the artists who created the artwork for the school building, whom curator Minna Tuominen thanked with flowers.

After a speech by Ulla Siimes, chair of the parents’ association, the fifth-grade pupils performed the Riihikallio song, which the audience enthusiastically joined in with.

The celebration culminated in an opera performance, in which pupils from the fourth and sixth grades of Riihikallio School, who focus on music in their studies, performed the school opera Tähtiainesta (Stardust) together with the Finnish National Opera. The theme of the opera was sustainable development.

Today, Wednesday 3 December, the opening week events continue with guided tours of the school, where those who have registered in advance can take a guided tour of the new school building.

Riihikallio School is a comprehensive school with approximately 700 pupils in South Tuusula. Riihikallio School operates on the principle of a local school for all schoolchildren in the area, from pre-school age to the end of primary school. The school is responsible for music-focused education in grades 3–9 in the municipality of Tuusula.

The school property consists of a new building constructed on the current school grounds and two preserved sections of the previous school building. Outside school hours, the property offers facilities for a wide range of leisure activities. A versatile local sports facility has been built in the courtyard.

Construction work has progressed faster than expected in some areas. Next week, an area for parking and drop-off traffic will be opened at the north end of the school. After this, the project will be complete except for a few minor finishing touches.
