Background information on Itärada
The Eastern Railway is a planned double-track high-speed railway line from Kerava to Kouvola via Porvoo. The Eastern Railway branches off from the planned Lentorata line between Pasila and Kerava in a tunnel in Tuusula/Vantaa at its western end and connects to the existing Lahti–Kouvola line at its eastern end.
In addition to long-distance traffic, the railway will enable the launch of local train services between Helsinki and Porvoo. The possibility of freight train services between Kerava and Kouvola is being investigated.
Depending on the option chosen, the total length of the eastern railway line will be a maximum of 118 kilometres. The railway line is planned for nine municipalities: Vantaa, Tuusula, Kerava, Sipoo, Porvoo, Loviisa, Lapinjärvi, Myrskylä and Kouvola.
Itärata Oy, established in 2022, is responsible for planning the railway project. Its field of activity is the planning of rail transport infrastructure related to the Lentorata-Porvoo-Kouvola high-speed rail connection, up to the construction stage. Itärata Oy is 51% owned by the state, represented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and 24 municipalities or cities.
