Mayor Janne Mellin signed sponsorship agreements yesterday with Silja Filenius, Iris Havulinna and Mila Heikkosen. The agreement with Joonas Kumpulainen had already been signed back in April.

The sports for which athletes receive support are athletics and volleyball. The grants range from €1,000 to €2,000 per year, and the contracts last for 1–2 years.

The athletes receiving support have already demonstrated a strong track record of success in their careers and are among the very best in their respective sports in Tuusula.

– I’ve been running since I was very young and have always known that it’s my sport, says Silja Filenius, who trains regularly at the Tuusula Sports Centre and whose main event is the 400 metres.

– I’ve just come back from training in Portugal, and before that I was in Tenerife. I’ve been in really good health over the past year – no problems there, says Mila Heikkonen, who specialises in the 400-metre hurdles.

Every athlete we support has set their sights high, and their determined training is geared towards achieving a professional standard.

– I’m part of the U18 women’s national team, which is preparing for the European Championships. The tournament will be held in July in Lithuania and Latvia, says volleyball player Iris Havulinna.

The application period for the culture and sport sponsorship grants awarded by Tuusula Municipality runs from 1 to 31 January each year. Fourteen applications were received during this round. In March, the municipal decided to award grants to four athletes.

– It will be really interesting to follow the career development of these young athletes, says Mayor Janne Mellin.

The aim of the sponsorship programme is to support the careers of young athletes and artists in particular, and to raise Tuusula’s profile.
