This time, it was children and young people under the age of 18 who got to decide in Tuusula. They were able to decide how to spend €150,000 by choosing their favourites from 170 proposals. Voters could vote for one or more proposals, provided they stayed within the budget. The votes were spread across many different proposals. The proposals to be implemented across the whole of Tuusula received the most votes. The escape game to be held in the villages of South Tuusula received the highest number of votes, 314. The YouTubers visiting all the municipal centres received almost the same number of votes.

A total of 2,413 children and young people cast their votes via the online participation platform. This figure does not include children in early years education groups who voted using methods appropriate to their age group outside the platform. For this reason, the number of voters is not directly comparable with previous Osbu votes.

– The results of the children and young people’s Osbu vote show that having a say is seen as meaningful when it is reflected in their own daily lives and local environment. The voting results highlight nature, physical activity and shared experiences, which support the wellbeing of children and young people in a tangible way, says Community Manager Katja Repo

The proposals with the most votes, by region

The available budget is allocated between the municipality as a whole and the individual areas in proportion to the number of children: Tuusula as a whole €60,000, the villages of South Tuusula €20,000, Hyrylä €30,000, Jokela (including Jäniksenlinna, Laululaakso, Purola and Vanhakylä) €16,000, Kellokoski €12,000 and Riihikallio €12,000.

This is how children and young people voted

Children and young people were able to make their voices heard in many ways: in early childhood education, at school and at open voting workshops – not to mention independent online voting in their free time.

– Voting methods varied according to age. Simple and clear voting materials were produced for younger children. In schools, pupils voted directly online during lessons. Open voting workshops also allowed children and young people in Tuusula who do not attend a nursery or school in Tuusula to cast their votes. All votes were ultimately collated in the same system, explains Repo, describing how the voting process unfolded.

Planning for the projects starts as early as the summer – come and join us!

The proposals that received the most votes in each area – and which will now be implemented as Osbu projects – will bring joy, well-being and a sense of community to children and young people, and they will be completed by the end of 2027. Planning for the first OSBU projects will begin this summer, and, for example, the campfire site in Riihikallio will be refurbished this year.

Osbu projects are planned in collaboration with children and young people. We also invite residents, clubs, associations, organisations and businesses to get involved. If you’re interested, please get in touch with the participation team using the contact details below.

Follow the progress of the projects from this summer onwards on the Tuusula participation platform and keep an eye out for upcoming Osbu events in the Tuusula events calendar.

– “Thank you to all the children and young people of Tuusula, as well as those attending schools in Tuusula, for taking part in the children’s and young people’s own OSBU tour – with a big heart and by working together, we are on a journey towards a more child-friendly municipality,” says Mayor Janne Mellin

Announcement of the voting results

The results of the vote were announced on 22 May 2026 at 1 p.m. during a live broadcast. A recording of the broadcast is available to watch afterwards on the Tuusula Municipality YouTube channel.

Voting methods used by children of early childhood education age, in which coloured pens and sticks have been used to select their favourite options.
In the early years groups, a few suggestions that were particularly suitable for each group of children were selected for a vote. The children were able to vote for their favourites, for example, by drawing on a piece of paper with a coloured pencil matching the colour that flashed up next to the suggestion and slipping it into the ballot box, or by placing a pea or a Duplo brick next to the suggestion. We even held a vote out in the springtime outdoors.
