The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency provides an update on the Helsinki–Riihimäki railway project: One lane will be closed on Vähänummentie and Nuppulinnantie in Järvenpää at the points where the road crosses the railway line until the end of August
As part of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s Helsinki–Riihimäki railway project, modification work related to the construction of additional tracks will be carried out on the Purola and Nuppulinna overpasses during the summer. During the works, only one lane will be open at the bridges crossing the railway line on Vähänummentie and Nuppulinnantie, and traffic will be controlled by traffic lights.
Work will begin on 15 June and is expected to continue until the end of August 2026. Temporary traffic arrangements will be in place on the Purola footbridge on Vähänummentie and the Nuppulinna footbridge on Nuppulinnantie. Traffic will be able to pass over the bridges throughout the works, and traffic will be controlled by traffic lights. The lane in use may change as the works progress.
“The edge beams, railings and water management systems on the bridges are being replaced, which means that part of the carriageway will be closed during the works. The bridge works are part of the construction of additional tracks between Purola and Nuppulinna. We will restore normal traffic arrangements as soon as the work is completed, even if the work is finished earlier than expected,” says Piia Jokihaara, Project Engineer at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

Follow the project:
The Helsinki–Riihimäki railway project will create the conditions for smoother traffic on Finland’s busiest section of track, the main line. The project will be implemented in three phases, the first of which was completed at the end of 2024. Construction of the second phase will take place between 2021 and 2030, during which additional tracks will be built between Kerava and Järvenpää and between Järvenpää and Jokela. A four-track section approximately 20 kilometres long will be formed between Kerava and Jokela. In Kerava, the freight track will be extended from the Sködvik line towards the Lahti direct line. From Hyvinkää towards Riihimäki, an additional western track will be built as far as Arolampi, and a freight track will be built from Hyvinkää on the Hanko line to the Riihimäki freight yard. In addition, modifications will be made to bridges, safety and signalling equipment, and noise abatement measures. The project is co-financed by the European Union.
