‘Come to the Museum’ Weeks open the doors to local history
Tuusula is full of fascinating museums. During the eighth edition of the ‘Tuu museoon’ weeks, running from 21 July to 2 August, specialist museums located across the municipality will be showcasing industrial and local history through a diverse range of exhibitions.
During the ‘Come to the Museum’ weeks, the Jokela Brickworks, the Kellokoski Ironworks Museum, the Kellokoski Hospital Museum, the Tuusula Car Museum, the Tuusula Workers’ Home Museum and Klaavola House are open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11.00–17.00. Halosenniemi, Erkkola, Aleksis Kivi’s Memorial Cottage, the Lotta Museum and the Air Defence Museum will be open during their normal opening hours. The ‘Come to the Museum’ weeks are organised in collaboration with the local council and the organisations that run the museums, and are funded by the Culture for All Fund.

The Jokela Brickworks and the Konehuone exhibitions
The Jokela brickworks was founded in 1874. Its 57-metre-long ring kiln, dating from the 1930s, is the only one of its kind still standing in Finland. In addition to the kiln’s protective building, the site also features artificial drying kilns, an engine room and the factory canteen. The site is complemented by information boards detailing Jokela’s history. The Brickworks Restaurant serves guests in the kiln shelter and the courtyard area according to its own opening hours.
During the ‘Tuu museon’ weeks, two exhibitions are on display in the Konehuone at the brickworks. ‘A Place of Memory – Scale Models of Places Important to the People of Tuusula’ showcases scale models created by Tuusula’s summer artist, Tua Holapa, and local residents. The Konehuone is also hosting a photography exhibition by Jarno Aavikko and Elmosa Raida entitled “Dissonance and Harmony”.
The Kellokoski Ironworks Factory Museum and Hospital Museum
The Factory Museum showcases the history of the Kellokoski ironworks, founded in 1795, and life in the surrounding village. The museum is situated in an authentic old factory setting, in the idyllic ironworks area that sprang up on the banks of the Kerava River rapids. This year’s summer exhibition, ‘Much Water Has Flown’, explores what has happened in the area since the end of industrial operations and showcases highlights from exhibitions spanning the museum’s 10-year history.
The Hospital Museum showcases the history of Western mental healthcare – its highlights and missteps. It also showcases some truly original patients. This summer, the Alitajunta Gallery is hosting the 10th-anniversary exhibition #Stigmattomuus by the Moniääniset taiteilijat collective. Guided tours departing from the museum courtyard at 1 pm will take visitors to explore the Kellokoski Manor, the hospital chapel and the therapeutic gardens located in the area.
Tuusula Car Museum
At the car museum, you can admire beautifully restored vehicles, each with its own story. All the cars in the museum are roadworthy and are often seen in various film productions and events. Many of the vehicles on display tell the story of Kuljetus R. Stenvall, but the museum also offers a broader picture of the history of motoring in Finland. The Tuusula Car Museum has been awarded the ‘Vehicle Museum of the Year 2026’ challenge trophy.
Museums will be celebrating Tuusula Day on 22 July.
The age of the municipality of Tuusula is calculated from the date on which the Turku Cathedral Chapter issued an official decision in principle regarding the establishment of a chapel parish in a letter dated 22 July 1643. This date is celebrated as Tuusula’s birthday and Tuusula Day.
This year, Tuusula’s 383rd anniversary will be celebrated with a cultural programme at Kellokoski Ironworks, where there will be music, theatre and workshops for the whole family. Tuusula’s museums are marking the occasion by offering free admission, and some are also organising a small programme of events.
The Tuusula Society is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, and to mark Tuusula Day, it is presenting museum visitors with copies of the *Aikakirjat* published over the years at various museum sites.
