Fjällbo Park wins the Green Flag Award once again

Fjällbo Park impressed the judges with its cosiness and wide range of recreational opportunities. The park’s historic buildings, refurbished structures and harmonious colour scheme come together to form a valuable and distinctive whole.  

The award criteria state that the scenically significant trees lining the waterfront have been beautifully highlighted, which enhances the area’s appeal. Biodiversity is enhanced by meadows, ornamental plants, useful plants, brushwood fences and valuable trees left to decay. The development-oriented approach of the team responsible for the park is evident in their enthusiasm for their work, their openness to new ideas and their strong team spirit.

The park has a long and rich history

Fjällbo is a historic park set against the backdrop of Lake Tuusulanjärvi. In the late 19th century, the park belonged to J. V. Frostell, the district constable of Tuusula. Fjällbo featured a stable, a cowshed and a henhouse, as well as a garden and farmland. After Frostell, Fjällbo was used as a holiday home for many years.  

Today, Fjällbo Park – with its diverse landscape – is managed with due regard for its natural values. Visitors to the area may notice tree trunks in the forest that have been left standing to provide a habitat for insects and polypores. 

In addition to Fjällbo, the Green Flag Award was presented to 24 other green spaces in Finland. The Pietarsaari School Garden and Mäki-Matti Family Park in Jyväskylä received the award for the first time. The scheme has been recognising parks in Finland since 2016, when the park at the Lepaa campus of Häme University of Applied Sciences was awarded the first Green Flag Award. Fjällbo has already received this recognition twice before.

Internationally recognised accolade

High-quality Green Flag Award sites take a holistic approach to the users of the area, the environment and their operational strategy. Finnish green spaces that have been awarded the label are part of an international network of over 2,400 green spaces across 17 countries, including Australia, Mexico, Turkey, Spain and the United States.

2026 is the Green Environment Association’s campaign year, with the theme ‘Well-being is built in a living environment’. The campaign highlights the importance of a living environment for people’s wellbeing and demonstrates how green spaces in the built environment support everyday wellbeing, health and a sense of community, whilst strengthening the vitality of local communities.
