A new, impressive secondary school – and cultural centre

The municipality of Tuusula is renewing its service network because it wants to ensure healthy and safe facilities for all children, young people and adults. With the construction of Monio in Rykmentinpuisto, Tuusula not only gained a new, impressive upper secondary school, but also a cultural centre worthy of a cultural community. The Monio upper secondary school and cultural centre offers residents of all ages the opportunity to lea new things and enjoy exciting cultural activities.

We involved different user groups in the design of Monio from the outset. Teachers and students from upper secondary school, Tuusula College, art school and music college, cultural actors, decision-makers and municipal employees were able to influence the design.

The largely wooden Monio rose up in the centre of Hyrylä.

Monio, with its log walls and largely wooden structure, is located in the centre of Hyrylä, with good transport connections. Monio is a blend of mode technology and historical influences. For example, the slatted panels resembling brick cladding on the gables and the shape of the roofs are reminiscent of the old military barracks that once operated in the area.

Important themes in the design of the premises were functionality, health and adaptability. We followed the Kuivaketju10 concept in the construction of the building, and the construction took place under weather protection to minimise the risk of the structures getting wet during the construction period. The materials used are mainly renewable. Monio is heated with carbon-neutral district heating, and we use green electricity in the building. The Monio construction site received the Rakennuslehti magazine’s Construction Site of the Year 2022 award, and upon completion, it was awarded the Puuinfo Wood Award for 2023.

A mode setting for lea ing and leisure activities

Monio offers a mode setting for lea ing and leisure activities: instead of traditional classrooms, Monio has adaptable spaces. In addition to an open lea ing environment, we built quiet nooks in Monio for group work and independent study. The facilities support the reformed curriculum in the best possible way. The larger spaces have enabled us to increase the number of upper secondary school students, and we have been able to expand and diversify our course offerings. Through team-based lea ing, students also take an active part in the development of the school, which allows us to tailor our activities to the students’ needs.

The premises open up new opportunities for cooperation. In addition to the upper secondary school, Tuusula College, Tuusula Art School, Central Uusimaa Music School and Tuusula Municipal Cultural Services operate under the same roof. The building’s halls enable the organisation of a wide range of cultural events. They can also be rented by other event organisers.

Memorable art experiences

Monio is not only a secondary school but also a cultural centre and living room for all residents. Monio encourages young people to enrol in their local secondary school, which offers a good lea ing environment and a wide range of courses. At the same time, Monio strengthens Tuusula’s position as a cultural municipality and promotes community life in the home municipality. Monio offers memorable artistic experiences: the premises can be used to organise various events, such as concerts, fairs, exhibitions and corporate events. Tuusula has long been in need of such facilities.

Construction work on Monio began in June 2021, and we started using the building in August 2023.

Start of operations: Monio commenced operations in autumn 2023.

Gross square metres: The building covers a total area of 8,773 gross square metres.

Implementation method: We implemented Monio as a tu key contract.
