Riihikallio School
The Riihikallio School, completed in 2025, accommodated the pupils of the existing Riihikallio School. The building provides children and young people with a familiar school environment throughout their school years.

The surrounding nature is an important part of the school
The rapidly developing southe
part of Tuusula gained a shared living room when a new school was completed in Riihikallio. The school consists of a new building constructed on the existing school grounds and two parts of the previous school building that were preserved.
The parts to be preserved are the upper school wing and the sports hall building. School activities will be located in the new building, and the old parts to be preserved will serve other residents. The old, renovated sports hall is mainly used by the school during the day. The first floor of the new building will also have spaces for evening use by residents, including craft rooms and sports and dining rooms, with a stage between them that opens onto both spaces.
We will carry out the renovation and change of use of the current upper school wing later, as a separate project.
The school brought a long-awaited mode and healthy school building to the area. The comprehensive school promotes the well-being and comfort of children, young people and employees. The aim of the design of the premises has been flexibility and listening to different user groups. In the design, we have taken into account the fact that lea ing environments are not limited to indoor spaces. The surrounding nature is also an important part of the whole.
The school combined ground source and district heating for the first time
The design of Riihikallio School complies with the guidelines set out in the publication Iloisen oppimisen Tuusula – oppimisympäristösuunnittelun suuntaviivat (Happy Lea ing in Tuusula – Guidelines for Lea ing Environment Design). In the design and implementation, we have paid particular attention to accessibility, indoor air quality, the acoustic environment and lighting. The premises are also intended to be suitable for children, young people and adults with sensory and physical disabilities.
At Riihikallio School, we utilise hybrid heating that combines ground source and district heating. This type of heating is the first of its kind in a public building in Tuusula. We also intend to continue utilising solar power, as we retained the solar panels used in the previous school building and installed additional solar panels on the roof of the new building.
Music-focused teaching continues at school
Riihikallio School provides children and young people with a familiar school environment throughout their school career, i.e. for 10 years. All pupils from pre-school to Year 9 study in the same school building. The school will be a four-form comprehensive school with a maximum of approximately 840 pupils and just over 20 pre-schoolers.
Riihikallio School continues to be a primary school with a focus on music, offering diverse music education to children and young people in Tuusula. We offer music-focused education to pupils from the third grade onwards. Music-focused classes enliven the school’s operating culture.
The doors are open to everyone outside school hours.
The school’s design has focused on participatory lea ing. We have also taken into account the importance of nature and children’s relationship with it. In addition, Riihikallio School is intended to serve different user groups as a lea ing and leisure environment and a shared living room for local residents. Outside school hours, the school offers facilities for various leisure activities, such as library and youth services, adult education centres, sports clubs, residents’ associations, parents’ associations and other stakeholders. The facilities are designed so that residents and various hobby groups can use them as flexibly as possible. We are creating a local sports facility open to everyone in the schoolyard, where we will place activities and equipment for gatherings, outdoor activities and exercise.
We organised a tender for the Riihikallio school project at the end of 2022, and construction began in early 2023. The new building was completed in 2025. The demolition of the old school and the renovation of the facades of the local sports field and sports hall will be completed in 2026.
Start of operations: The new building was completed in spring 2025, and school operations began in August 2025. The entire complex, including the grounds, will be completed in August 2026.
Gross floor area: The new building has a gross floor area of 11,588 square metres and the sports hall building has a gross floor area of 1,677 square metres.
Implementation method: We implemented the Riihikallio school project as a tu key contract.
