Martta Wendelin Daycare Centre
The Martta Wendelin daycare centre, which opened in August 2022, took over the former Hyrylä and Väinölä daycare centres.

Healthy and safe facilities
We built the Martta Wendelin daycare centre because we are committed to providing healthy and safe facilities for children in daycare. Construction began at the end of 2020, and we will start using the new facilities on 1 August 2022.
Built with the environment and children in mind
The building materials are environmentally friendly and reduce the carbon footprint: we used solid CLT elements as the material, and the exterior cladding of the building is made of larch panelling that is resistant to weather variations. The construction site was covered to minimise the risk of the structures getting wet during the construction period. As proof of its environmental friendliness, the daycare centre was awarded the Swan label in August 2022. The daycare centre also received the Inte ational Wood Architecture Award on 13 April 2023 and the Finlandia Prize for Architecture on 2 October 2023.
The location of the building has been carefully considered. We conducted air quality and noise studies to ensure that the location is good and safe for children. We used Martta Wendelin’s art prominently as part of the daycare centre’s interior design.
The best possible setting for early childhood education
The Martta Wendelin Daycare Centre offers the best possible environment for early childhood education: we designed the space specifically for use as a daycare centre from the outset. All of our design decisions are guided by the goal of creating a daycare centre that promotes children’s well-being and supports their development and lea ing.
Martta Wendelin is a daycare centre with 10 groups and space for approximately 200 children. Thanks to carefully considered spatial solutions, children can work in small groups that are important to them. At the same time, the large daycare unit makes it easier to arrange substitute care, as there are familiar adults available. The premises also include a gym, an art studio, a dining room and office space, and the daycare centre has a large yard.
Multi-purpose spaces are transformed into places for residents to pursue their hobbies
We utilised the Iloisen oppimisen Tuusula (Happy Lea ing Tuusula) handbook, workshop activities and participatory planning in our space planning and pedagogy. We have listened to and taken on board the children’s ideas, for example, regarding the functionality of the daycare centre’s playground. We have designed all the spaces in the building to be multi-purpose and flexible, so that they can be enjoyed not only by the daycare staff and children, but also by other members of the community. For example, a local circus school, which uses the hall in the evenings for aerial acrobatics classes, was involved in the design of the sports hall. The studio is well suited for basic art education, and the aim is for the spaces to be used in the evenings for residents’ hobbies and other activities.
Gross square metres: The building covers a total area of 3,234 gross square metres.
Implementation method: We implemented the Martta Wendelin daycare centre as a split contract.
Start of operations: We started using the building in 2022.
