New healthy and safe facilities

Tuusula’s goal is to build healthy and safe facilities for children, young people and staff. That is why the municipality built the Tuusulanjärvi school and daycare centre. The new complex has facilities for early childhood education, pre-school education, basic education for grades 1–6 and Swedish-language education in Tuusula. We involved children, pupils and employees in the design of the lea ing environments and operating culture from the outset.

Daycare and school working closely together

The Finnish- and Swedish-language daycare centre and school work in close cooperation in Tuusulanjärvi. The new premises replace the Kirkonkylä school building and the Mattila daycare centre. Together with the Martta Wendelin daycare centre, the premises also replace some of the daycare buildings that are being removed from South Tuusula. Swedish-language teaching at Klemetskog School has been transferred to the Tuusulanjärvi premises. The new building provides facilities for approximately 450 pupils and 189 children of early childhood education age.

We promoted the circular economy in construction. We utilised suitable demolition materials from the demolished school building in Kirkonkylä in the construction of the noise barrier and the base floors of the car park. The exterior walls of the building have a single-material honeycomb structure. The construction was carried out in accordance with the Terve Talo (Healthy Building) concept criteria, resulting in a building with a healthy, safe and comfortable indoor climate. The premises are heated with carbon-neutral district heating, and we use green electricity in the building.

Creativity and future skills

The new facilities provide a setting for diverse activities suitable for different age groups and lea ing styles. The lea ing environments support pupils’ creativity, functionality, individuality, collaborative working methods, ownership of lea ing and future skills. When designing the courtyard areas, we paid attention to their educational and teaching content, safety and ease of maintenance.

Spaces are transformed into communal places for leisure activities

At Tuusulanjärvi School and Daycare Centre, children and young people receive early childhood education and teaching in facilities designed for them and their lea ing needs today. The facilities are designed to be flexible, and the building, with its courtyards and nearby sports areas, also serves other residents in the evenings and at weekends. The new building and its courtyards serve as a hub for the area and a shared environment for lea ing and leisure activities. The identity of municipal centres is strengthened by the opportunities for activities provided by the new school and daycare buildings, and the operating culture is also changing. The change in operating culture arises from an understanding of how different things affect each other in everyday life.

Construction work on the Tuusulanjärvi school and daycare centre began in December 2021, and we took the premises into use in August 2024.

Start of operations: Operations at the premises began in August 2024.

Gross square metres: The building covers an area of approximately 8,271 gross square metres.
