Maintenance of outdoor ice rinks
On weekdays, we generally plough the fields by 8 a.m. for school use. If snowfall continues uninterrupted, the fields are ploughed once the snow has stopped falling. On weekends, we plough the fields by 10 a.m.
Starting to freeze outdoor fields requires a longer period of frost, and freezing work progresses according to weather conditions.
Frequently asked questions about outdoor ice rinks
Why are the lights on the rink not working?
Answer: There are usually two reasons for this. 1) The rink is not yet safe for skating. The lights will be tu
ed on and the goals will be brought onto the rink as soon as the ice is ready. 2) There is a malfunction in the rink lights or they require maintenance. We are grateful for any reports that help us resolve the situation more quickly.
How is the clearing of the fields organised?
Answer: Tuusula Leisure Services currently maintains eleven (11) outdoor ice rinks in accordance with the principles outlined on this page. Two (2) rinks are maintained by volunteers, the Mattila and Tuomala school rinks. On weekdays (during school terms), we generally clear the rinks by 8 a.m. for school use. If snowfall continues uninterrupted, the rinks are cleared once the snow has stopped falling. At weekends, we clear the rinks by 10 a.m.
How quickly can the rink be made ready for skating?
Answer: Under good conditions, we can get the rink ready for skating in a few days. Severe frost and snowfall hinder the freezing process and prevent the surface of the rink from becoming completely ready for skating.
Is it safe to skate on the rinks?
Answer: The surface of outdoor ice rinks is rarely completely flat. Ruts, wear and tear, and loose sand grains that may have found their way onto the ice can lead to unexpected falls. To skate safely on outdoor ice, you should always wear a helmet.
Is there outdoor ice skating in Tuusula?
Answer: There is no outdoor ice skating in Tuusula. If conditions for outdoor ice skating are poor, you can go skating during public skating hours at ice rinks.
Skater etiquette
Outdoor ice rinks are intended for the free use of all residents. When there are many small children and skaters on the rink, dangerous warm-ups, high wrist shots and other dangerous play should be avoided. Shooting at the fences surrounding the rinks is prohibited, as they cannot withstand being hit by pucks and there is a risk of equipment flying into neighbouring properties. So let’s keep the pucks on the ice and play safely.
