Library card and borrowing services
The library is open to everyone. A library card gives you access to the services of the Kirkes libraries (Tuusula, Järvenpää, Kerava and Mäntsälä).

Library card
You can get a library card from the library. By doing so, you agree to comply with the library’s rules of use. The first library card is free of charge. With a library card, you can use the services of all Kirkes libraries, i.e. Tuusula, Järvenpää, Kerava and Mäntsälä. Children under the age of 15 need an adult guarantor.
To get a card, you must visit the library, where the customer or guardian must present a valid photo ID.
Notify the library immediately if your library card is lost.
Please also remember to update your address and contact details, as the library does not receive them automatically from the post office or the local register office. Each customer is responsible for keeping their own details up to date.
Community card
Daycare centres, schools and other institutions can obtain a community card, which can only be used for materials intended for community use. The card requires the appointment of a responsible person, and loans are valid for six weeks. The community card is valid for one year and can be renewed by library staff checking the contact details.
Loans and returns
You need a library card to borrow items. You can find your electronic library card in your Kirkes online library account.
Loan periods and loan amounts
The loan period is 1–4 weeks, depending on the material.
Most common loan periods:
- 28 days: books, sheet music, audiobooks and CDs
- 14 days: new books for adults, magazines, LPs, console games, board games, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, sports equipment, musical instruments, everyday items
- 7 days: quick loans.
You can borrow up to 150 items at a time from Kirkes libraries. You can have the following items on loan:
- up to 30 DVDs or Blu-ray discs
- up to 10 CD-ROM discs
- A maximum of 5 console games.
Borrowing and returning materials
Kirkes library customers can borrow materials from the Tuusula library or order them from other Kirkes libraries. You can return your loans to any Kirkes library, except for objects, sports equipment and musical instruments, which must be returned to the same library from which they were borrowed.
Loans must be returned by the due date during library opening hours. Tuusula libraries have self-service machines for borrowing and returning items.
Outside opening hours, you can leave returns in the return boxes at the Jokela and Kellokoski local libraries, where they will be processed on the next opening day.
A fee will be charged for late returns.
Reservations
To reserve materials in the online library, you first need to log in using your library card number and PIN code. If you do not have a PIN, present a photo ID at the library to obtain one. You can also make reservations by telephone or with the help of library staff.
How to make a reservation in the Kirkes online library
- Search for the title you want to reserve in the online library.
- Click the “Place a hold on this title” button and select which library you want to pick it up from.
- Submit your request.
- You will receive a notification from the library when your hold is available for pickup.
You can freeze (temporarily suspend) your library holds e.g. for holidays and have them delivered at a later date.
You can reserve items free of charge from any Kirkes library, however, a hold fee of 2 € will be charged if the item is not picked up. Customers younger than 15 are not charged for unpicked-up items.
Suggestion for purchase
If you cannot find the material you are looking for in the Kirkes Library, you can submit a suggestion for purchase to the library. You can fill in the purchase request form to submit your request. All suggestions will be taken into consideration; however, some items cannot be acquired or are not available for library use.
Interlibrary loans
If you need material that is not available in the Kirkes libraries’ collections, you can order it as an interlibrary loan from another library.
Remote service for private customers
You can submit an interlibrary loan request at any library branch or using the online form below.
Interlibrary loan requests do not appear in the online library, but starting June 1, 2026, interlibrary loans will be added to your library card as usual. When you receive a pickup notification, you must pick up the interlibrary loan at the library’s customer service desk. The pickup notification will show the last day for pickup.
Interlibrary loan periods and renewals
Due dates for interlibrary loans are determined by the lending library. The library will renew interlibrary loans upon request.
Send renewal requests to kaukopalvelu.kirjasto@tuusula.fi.
Payments and refunds
Interlibrary loans have charges associated with them. Late fees and fees for uncollected reservations are charged in accordance with the library’s payment practices. Interlibrary loan fees are determined by the owner library and may be higher than those charged by the Tuusula Library.
Interlibrary loans must be returned to the same library they were picked up from.
Interlibrary loan service for other libraries
Other libraries can order materials from Tuusula Municipal Library for their customers via interlibrary loan. We do not charge other libraries for interlibrary loans.
Requests can be sent to the email address kaukopalvelu.kirjasto@tuusula.fi.
