In November, we encourage you to talk about care
Preventive substance abuse awareness week will be held from 3 to 9 November 2025. This yearu0026#x27;s theme is u0026#x27;Talking about addiction – Bring it up in timeu0026#x27;.
During this week, we want to encourage everyone to stop, ask questions and talk openly if they have concerns about their own or a loved one’s substance use or other addiction. When we dare to talk about our concerns, we build a community where everyone can be heard and understood. Even small actions can have a big impact.
Why is it important to voice your concerns?
Substance abuse can be linked to many challenges in life, such as mental health issues, loneliness or difficulties in managing everyday life. When concerns remain hidden, people can become very isolated in their situation. Talking about your concerns can be the first step towards change and getting help.
People often fear that raising concerns will cause offence or conflict. In reality, raising concerns is a sign of caring and a demonstration of a desire to deal with difficult issues respectfully, without labelling or blaming. When concerns are raised respectfully and with a willingness to listen, it can open up a conversation that helps the other person see their situation in a new light. Problems often grow slowly, which is why early intervention is important. Raising the issue does not require special training or a professional title; genuine presence and caring are enough.
Sometimes people are not ready to talk about their concerns, which is completely normal. The most important thing is that you have shown that you care and offered the opportunity for discussion. Often, simply raising the concern in a respectful manner can open the door to further discussion later on.
Multidisciplinary cooperation in Central Uusimaa
Addressing concerns is not just a matter for individuals, but a key part of the basic work of many professionals, for example in social and health care, education and youth work. Central Uusimaa has a preventive substance abuse working group that cooperates to promote well-being in the region. The group includes representatives from social and health care, municipalities, the third sector and other actors.
“Together, we support municipalities and Keusote service areas in organising and developing preventive work, for example by strengthening skills in raising concerns and supporting preventive activities.”
Tips for raising concerns (Raise the issue cards 2024, Keusote)
Pause: Take a moment to consider where your concern stems from and what feelings it evokes in you. Take a moment to think about the right opening words to start the conversation.
Ask: Remember to be respectful and avoid blaming the person. Expressing your concern and care is a good way to start: “I am worried about you and your health.”
Listen: Choose a natural situation and a quiet place to start the conversation. Good listening means agreeing with the speaker and encouraging them to say more. Avoid commenting, making assumptions, offering solutions and talking over them. You can ask additional questions, but do not interrogate. If necessary, search for additional information on the topic together and recommend links or support services where more information can be found.
Encourage: Maintain an encouraging approach. If the person is concerned about their own situation, try to identify the first steps towards change. Even a small step is a step forward.
