Tua Holappa, a set designer from Helsinki, is a visual designer in the performing arts and a student of set design at the Theatre Academy; the term ‘set designer’ refers to the person responsible for designing the visual world of a performance. She has been selected as Tuusula’s summer artist for June and July. Holappa has experience of independent theatre and dance projects, in which she has worked as a set designer and as a spatial, costume and visual designer, amongst other roles.

– I’m really excited about my role as a summer artist in Tuusula. Over the summer, I want to explore places that are important to the people of Tuusula, along with the memories, feelings and details associated with them. It’s interesting, for example, to consider what we remember about places that have already disappeared, or where the sunlight fell on the floor of my childhood living room, says Holappa

In her artistic practice, Holappaa is interested in the relationship between the artwork and the audience, and how different spaces influence this relationship. Other themes that are important to her include the accessibility of art, as well as ecological and social sustainability. She also examines phenomena through conceptual thinking.

In the workshops, residents of Tuusula delve into their own meaningful spaces

The summer artist’s work is divided between collaborative projects with local residents and their own artistic practice. These activities support the young artist’s professional development.

– I’m really into building scale models. There’s something magical about them! In the workshops held during the summer, we’ll be reminiscing and capturing places that are meaningful to participants in the form of scale models. In July, the models will be assembled into an installation that forms a map of the important places, memories and feelings of the people of Tuusula, says Holappa.

Details of the workshops and their timetables will be provided separately.

Tuusula hired a summer artist for the first time in 2022. The role of the summer artist is to encourage an artist at the start of their career to pursue their artistic work and carry out the art project they proposed during the application process. The summer artist will work in the municipality of Tuusula from June to July as part of the cultural producers’ team.
