Promoting physical activity among children and young people
Tuusula promotes physical activity and an active lifestyle in the environments where children and young people spend their daily lives. It is known that increasing physical activity during early childhood education, pre-school and school days can contribute to children’s well-being and, above all, encourage children who do not get much exercise to be more active.
Mobile early childhood education and pre-school education
In Tuusula’s early childhood education and pre-school education, more attention is being paid to children’s physical activity and, in particular, to increasing strenuous exercise in various activities throughout the day. Each early childhood education unit has physical activity coordinators who coordinate physical education in their own units and encourage staff to plan and implement a wide range of activities related to children’s physical activity. Physical activity is increased in everyday life by involving children.
The planning and implementation are guided by Tuusula’s early childhood education and pre-school education plans, which emphasise the importance of providing children with a variety of lea
ing environments that enable them to engage in diverse physical activities.
Mobile school
Every primary school in Tuusula participates in the Active School programme. The Active School programme has been implemented in Tuusula for several years. Teachers promote a culture of physical activity in schools by incorporating more movement into both lessons and breaks. Functional lea ing methods are used in teaching, and efforts are made to increase movement during breaks through activities such as break-time games and equipment lending.
The SchoolPT programme offers children and young people in primary schools the opportunity to receive personalised support for physical activity and healthy lifestyles. KouluPT supports and encourages children to be physically active in their everyday lives and can, for example, try out different forms of exercise with the child, either one-on-one or in a small group. The aim of the SchoolPT programme is to use the MOVE! measurement results to guide children to SchoolPT so that those who need the most support receive personalised support according to their individual needs.
The activity receives a grant from the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southe Finland for the operating years 2025–2026.
Swimming lessons for schoolchildren
Lea ing to swim is an important physical skill for everyone. It ensures safety in the water and is an excellent form of exercise.
The municipal leisure services, Tuusulan uimaseura ry (Tuusula Swimming Club) and schools are working together to provide swimming lessons for children in Tuusula. Swimming lessons are normally offered to all pupils in grades 1–5. Due to the renovation of the Tuusula swimming pool, swimming lessons have been temporarily reduced for the duration of the renovation. In the 2025-2026 school year, swimming lessons will be held at the Järvenpää swimming pool, and during the autumn term, lessons will be held for grades 1 and 2.
During the 2025–2026 school year, primary and secondary school pupils in Tuusula will receive a swimming pass entitling them to two free visits to the swimming pool. The swimming pass can be used at swimming pools in Järvenpää, Kerava and Hyvinkää.
Mobile secondary school
The Mobile High School programme at Tuusula High School aims to promote physical activity during the school day. Over the years, the Mobile High School programme has organised sports days, wellness coaching, break exercise equipment and other measures to increase physical activity.
