Attractive housing and efficient services make Tuusula a pleasant place for residents and businesses to live and work.
Between 3 and 23 November 2025, the municipality of Tuusula conducted a survey to gauge the satisfaction of Tuusula residents and the awareness of Tuusula among people living in neighbouring areas. At the same time, a business vitality survey was conducted among companies in the area. The results are now available.
The surveys aimed at residents and businesses received a large number of responses – 1,366 people responded to the resident survey and 213 businesses responded to the business vitality survey. Respondents came from both Tuusula and neighbouring areas. The results can be considered representative.
The aim
of the resident survey was to determine resident satisfaction, strengths and weaknesses, as well as factors attracting residents and awareness of Tuusula. The surveys were also used to monitor developments in the results from previous years.
It is important for the municipality to monitor how residents feel about living in the area and how well the municipality has succeeded in its basic tasks. The results of resident surveys are also used to identify areas for development in all sectors. It is truly valuable that we received a large number of responses this year to serve as a knowledge base, says Acting Director of Welfare Ada Pentinmikko.
The survey aimed at businesses examined the satisfaction, current situation and future goals of businesses in Tuusula, as well as the attractiveness of Tuusula from the perspective of businesses in neighbouring areas.
The results of the survey provided us with ideas for business-oriented development measures and discussions, so I would like to thank everyone who participated in the survey. Some of the measures can be implemented fairly quickly, but others require long-term work, says Business Manager Toni Popovic.
Residents appreciate Tuusula’s proximity to nature and child-friendliness – wishes to preserve nature and safety, develop services and improve public transport
According to the results of a resident survey, the majority of Tuusula residents are satisfied with living in Tuusula. Tuusula residents accounted for 63% of all respondents to the resident survey. Sixty-eight per cent of Tuusula residents are very or extremely satisfied with their home municipality. Seventy-one per cent are fairly or extremely likely to still be living in Tuusula in three years’ time. Of the respondents living elsewhere, 42% consider Tuusula’s reputation as a place to live to be fairly or very good, meaning that Tuusula’s visibility and opportunities are already at a fairly good level.
Tuusula residents consider the most successful services to be sports and leisure services (average 3.7/5.00), education and training services (3.6), early childhood education services (3.5) and events and cultural offerings (3.5). Services aimed specifically at families with children, such as daycare centres and schools, receive particular praise. The accessibility and quality of services are emphasised. Many appreciate the peaceful environment and nearby nature trails, which provide excellent opportunities for outdoor activities and recreation. Tuusula is seen as a peaceful and safe place where children can play outside without worry. The community spirit in the area is seen as strong.
The residents of Tuusula are concerned about the deterioration of health services, particularly in Jokela and Kellokoski, and inadequate transport links. Some feel that economic factors are given priority over other values, such as the environment and residents’ well-being, in decision-making. It is felt that dense construction may reduce the amount of green space in residential areas.
The first images that come to mind for Tuusula residents when they think of Tuusula are nature, Lake Tuusula, tranquillity and culture. People living elsewhere mention, among other things, tranquillity, remoteness, Lake Tuusula, Hyrylä, closeness to nature and development.
When residents were asked about their regional housing and living needs and wishes that Tuusula should develop and take into account in the future, consistent wishes were mentioned in relation to community development, particularly the preservation of nature and safety, and the development of the service network. The importance of transport connections and technical services, such as street maintenance and facilities, were also emphasised in the responses. Public transport services were mentioned as the most important area for development.
The residents of Tuusula consider safety, tranquillity, proximity to nature and comfort to be important factors in their living environment. Respondents feel that Tuusula has succeeded in terms of safety and tranquillity, but also in being a developing and family-friendly municipality. People living elsewhere feel that in order to improve Tuusula’s appeal, the focus should be on developing the transport infrastructure and diversifying the living environment.
Vitality for businesses by providing plots and premises and facilitating networking
A total of 112 companies in Tuusula and 101 companies in neighbouring areas responded to the business vitality survey aimed at companies. Respondents outside Tuusula consist only of companies with a turnover of more than €2 million, which is important to note when comparing internal and external results. No similar turnover limit was applied to companies in Tuusula: one third of respondents are sole traders and 28% work in companies with 2–4 employees.
In their near-term goals, both Tuusula-based companies and those in neighbouring areas are moderately growth-oriented and aim to maintain their current turnover.
When asked how likely it is that a Tuusula-based company will continue to operate in the Tuusula area over the next three years, 63% of respondents consider it very likely and 18% consider it fairly likely. Although many companies are not planning any changes, there is also interest in moving to Vantaa, Helsinki or elsewhere, if premises and other conditions allow. Some consider the current location to be a challenge. Suggestions for improvement relate to, among other things, transport and parking facilities, infrastructure development such as telecommunications connections and industrial areas, as well as the availability and attractiveness of labour.
Internal respondents highlight the following as the most important areas for development: increasing general well-being and vitality, improving public transport, zoning that enables the provision of affordable plots, more support measures for businesses, and developing the municipality’s visibility.
Twenty per
cent of Tuusula-based businesses are fairly or very familiar with the services offered to businesses in Tuusula. Small businesses (6%) and micro-businesses (18%) were more familiar with these services than medium-sized businesses. The majority of internal respondents are satisfied with the municipality’s current communication of business services or do not feel the need for any changes to the current communication. However, there are wishes to increase awareness of the services offered by the municipality, such as networking opportunities, and to provide more detailed information on, for example, public procurement.
Almost half of internal respondents consider Tuusula to be a fairly or very business-friendly municipality, and 41% of external respondents agree.
According to companies in Tuusula, the most successful factors in Tuusula are its attractiveness as a place to live (average 3.6/5.0), the town’s appealing image (3.4), effective cooperation with local business services and excellent transport connections (3.3). According to internal respondents, the least successful factors are the promotion of the availability of international labour in the municipality, the smoothness of permit services, the supply of skilled labour and the availability of premises suitable for business needs.
In the minds of external respondents, Tuusula is seen as a positive place to do business with a good location. 80% are familiar with Tuusula in some way other than by name, and 42% of them are fairly or very familiar with it. Tuusula is therefore also considered a viable business location by entrepreneurs in neighbouring areas. Just under 30% of external respondents could possibly or probably locate in Tuusula in the near future. External respondents believe that Tuusula’s attractiveness would be enhanced by, among other things, investments in transport connections and adequate infrastructure.
